The Government of the Republic of Burundi
The Republic of Burundi operates under a presidential system, where the President is vested with both the executive role of the head of government and the duties of the head of state. This configuration underscores the central role of the President in the governance and administration of the nation.
Presidential Leadership
The President of the Republic of Burundi is elected directly by the populace through a democratic process that necessitates an absolute majority for a victory. Should no candidate secure such a majority in the initial ballot, a second round is conducted between the two candidates with the highest votes. The term of office for the President is set at seven years, allowing for substantial periods of sustained policy implementation and governance. The last election, held in May 2020, was a testament to the nation’s commitment to democratic processes and governance.
Vice Presidential Role
In alignment with the constitutional framework, the Vice President plays a supportive role to the President. Nominated by the President, the candidate for the Vice Presidency must be endorsed by Parliament. The current office holder is, Mr. Prosper Bazombanza.
